On attending church last night with Ally and reflecting on passages from The Book of Luke describing the events and relevance of the Last Supper, I came up with this as sort of a devotional poem:
Book of Luke 22
(In the Nme of Jesus)
by Michael Romani
At the table, bread was broken
Under words He had spoken
Then, He poured out His cup
Knowing that time would soon be up
And established the new covenant
Fulfilling and replacing the old covenant
These were the things that mattered
As ties to the old were shattered
All the requirements were in Him met
Fulfilled completely, least we forget
Darkness was there and closing in
As Jesus readied himself, taking on our sin
One last meal with His Disciples together
A celebration shared in traditional Seder
A reminder that looked back and ahead
Reflected in the very words that He said
God’s promises were close at hand
In they days ahead, they would understand
Stung by the sheer horror of the cross
Unfinished travails would be felt as loss
All in the name of humanity’s healing
Broken bread and shared cup revealing
In a chastening of scourging punishment
Came in Jesus’ acceptance and full intent
A promise kept by His perfected soul
Bought salvation from Satan’s control
In a suffering in the name of man’s sins
A thousand angels dancing on sacred pins
In praise through a moment of sacred prayer
The torment of God laid bare for our care
