“Happiness consists more in conveniences of pleasures that occur every day than in great pieces of good fortune that happen but seldom.” – Benjamin Franklin

So many these days seem to think that it is the other way around. That only the great pieces of good fortune bring happiness. Simple pleasures are said to not be enough. Because of this, so may seek to put on the airs of great fortune and live beyond their means or where the bling that serves as badges of a hedonistic society. Moving from one thrill to the next, those who choose this path prove easily bored until finally there is nothing at all that gives the that thrill that they pursue.
For me, it seems that the steadier course of simpler pleasures are they to find that moderate share of happiness that is adequately provided in even joyful abundance. Today, for example, I find my pleasure in a half price Black Raspberry and Chocolate Ship Milkshake, the kind words of my love and my little girls, and knowing that I reacted quickly enough when the fuse box glitched and prevented a fire that might have caused considerable damage. God is good and I am blessed.
I would argue that it’s enough to have these little conveniences of pleasure. True enough, it would be nice from time to time to have greater pieces of good fortune. But, life is spent less in chasing after these than in good, honest living and enjoying the blessings that come our way. In this assurance, I live my life in gratitude for the blessing received. In this, I find a good deal of happiness. Conversely and to my amazement, I have known people who have been said to have been born with a silver spoon in their mouths who have never seemed satisfied nor found enough to fill that quest for pleasure.
Just something to think on, I suppose. Seem to me that Ben Franklin has this right.
