Vasquez Rocks

Turns out that a blogger out there, Bel, has recently visited a place that I have photographed in real.  I didn’t have any of my photos of Vasquez Rocks to share, but, I do have this poem that I wrote back in 2015.  I’ll accompany it with a public  domain pic of the beautiful place.  It has served as the backdrop for many movies.

Vasquez Rocks
by Michael Romani

Just northeast of LA
A piece of Hollywood magic
Waited for us that day
As it is with all magic
We only needed to arrive
To feel thrilled to be alive

Exclaiming the name of a thousand scenes
We pulled into the desert parking lot
As you excitedly  recalled childhood dreams
Many of which you had thought you had forgot
All of them rushing up to the surface
It was worth the drive to the see the smile on your face

Stepping out with my camera at ready
The mid-morning sun was holding steady
As steady as the smile on your face
I rested assured you were enchanted with the place
It felt great that moment on that day
A special kind of feeling I wished would always stay

I remember how you laughed so hard
As I played out my Wile E Coyote card
Chasing that roadrunner across the lot
Trying so much for that photo that you sought
As your mighty hunter, I sprang across tables
Trying so hard to  keep up as much as able

I never did get that photo
But it was good enough that you'd know
That I'd given it my very best
Until I collapsed n my back to rest
Sticking this treasured moment's memory
In what's now a half forgotten portfolio of you and me

One of the rocks stood like a stone sail
Its planted form across the blue horizon
Our climb up went really well
Our way down took a lot of compromising
Calling it butt hiking, we scooted on down
As we laughed, each of us looking like clowns

This private magic was better than Hollywood
It felt so solid;  It felt so good.
I never dreamed it would go away
I still smile when I think of this day
When I hung over the cliff to photograph a raven's nest
These are the times that I loved the best

Hi, Michael! Vasquez Rocks really brought back those awesome memories and the poem is lovely – seems like you had something that you’ll always treasure with someone who was once part of your life. Too bad about losing those pictures!
