Time Spent With the Harvard Classics: Ode To Winter – Thomas Campbell

Thomas Campbell was a Scottish poet who lived from July 27, 1777 through June 15, 1844.  He is mainly remembered for his sentimental poetry, particularly as this centers on human doings and beings.  He founded or co-founded the Clarence Club and the Literary Association of the Friends of Poland and had much to do with the founding of the University College London.   Among his best known works are The Pleasures of Hope Ye Mariners of England,  The Soldier’s DreamHohelinden, and The Battle of Mad and Strange Turkish Princes.

He was also know for writing Ode to Winter.  It may be read in its entirety here:

Or listened to as an audiobook here:

As this is July 1st, some of you will find that by allowing the above to continue playing that I am also sharing the playlist set up for my daughters.  It is my hope that these audiobooks and lectures might be useful to others and perhaps entertaining.  In any case, I am certain they will not mind sharing this with the world at large.

My hope is to do my little bit to share some of the major literary works that helped to shape Western Civilization.  It is my observation in life that too few know of these works.  It is my further observation that the more is the pity that people generally do not.  While not all the truth in the world is found in these works, certainly enough of it is that if we were all acquainted with these works it could not but help to make this world into a better place.  At least, that is my ardent hope.
