“Pure democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security, or the rights of property; and have, in general, been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.” – James Madison, in Federalist Number 10 (1787)

One problem: Jefferson NEVER said this.

It’s interesting that something Jefferson “never” said was quoted in Kelo v. The City of New London in the USSC. How about we settle on Monticello disputes it being said by Jefferson and yet as long as I remember and I’m older maybe than you think, this quote as been attributed to him. Snopes (a Leftist site) says that Jefferson never said this. But, their argument that it is spurious as a quote dates back according to them to 2004. I can promise you this. I heard this as a quote being attributed to Jefferson longer ago than the 1980s. If it’s not a quote from Jefferson, I would like to see some reference that explains why it was being referred to as a quote back in the 1980s and my independent recollection is that I heard it back in the late 70s. So.. who do you think think really said it? I won’t say you’re wrong. And I did digging enough to read through that leftist cite Snopes to see they discredit the attribution. I just sort of tend to disagree that just because some leftist site says it isn’t so that it makes it not so.
