Thought For the Day: Painting Is Poetry

Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.”  – Leonardo da Vinci

There is a lot to be said for the beauty of God’s creation.  If anyone were to ask me, I would gladly tell them that I believe God to be the greatest artist ever.  The greater the artist, the more that artist has allowed God’s creativity to flow inside him or herself.  We mere mortals who view this art are given the privilege of soaking in a thousand, million ways of seeing this.  More importantly, perhaps, is soaking in the feelings we gain in the process.

It is said that a picture is worth ten thousand words.  That may seem a trite cliché.  To me, it seems a vast understatement.  I have seen artwork that has captivated my soul.  Sometimes art transforms inside me into feelings that I could never hope to capture in words.  But, if I were to try words to express these feelings invoked, I am certain these words would be compelled to be poetic.

While at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and researching some of the artwork the girls would be viewing, I found that conversely that sometimes poems capture the souls of artists and composers.  There is a fair amount of artwork inspired by those who felt compelled to transform words into either visual art or music compositions.  It’s a strange kind of beautiful almost mysticism in how the arts tend to correspond.  I am quite certain that my choreographer, Ally, would hasten to tell me with her beautiful smile that I have forgotten dance here.  With a smile, I would reply back, no, that’s just a topic for another day…
