First Principles: The Precious Blessings of America Need To Be Appreciated

“How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy!”  – Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to James Monroe, on June 17, 1785

It is too easy to take for granted our country.  Even easier still for some to take for granted what it means to be American and how richly we are blessed.  When Jefferson wrote this to Madison, we were in an early period of starting to develop what it exactly means to be an American.

Today, we are still a young nation.  We have been experiencing birth pains.  Some seek to forget our past because all they wish to dwell on is the negative.  Somehow they have lost track of all of the positive.  I suppose the correct response is to pray for them and over education.  Willful ignorance, however, is hard to overcome.

This is not to ignore the dark side of things either.  There’s something to be said for positive change.  Positive change does not come at the hands of violence from either or any side.  Change is meant to be  slow and gradual in the United States.  In part, what we are seeing today is that the Left moved too hard, too deep and too disregarding those who have come before and without really thinking sometimes.  Thinking on the fact that a great deal of this nation does not want or believe we need some of the changes that have been forced on us in the last little bit of our history.

Oddly, patriotism has been disregarded as an evil nationalism.  And the eyes of the Left are so badly out of focus that I honestly believe it’s a good question.  What comes next?  Even Barak Obama a man who was both black and white has very clearly had his racist moments.  Don’t believe me?  Ask anyone who grew up with him during his high school years.  That’s all I’ll say on that for now.  And if you say well that’s just the impulses of youthful indiscretions, please take an honest and candid look at his reactions toward law enforcement and those who disagree with him.  Again, willful ignorance is very hard to overcome.

But, I think an honest look might be to say that yes there are pluses and minuses of America.  Overall, we are strong positive force for the good in the history of mankind.  We need to have more of a look at our blessings and express appreciation and forgiveness.  This rough patch will be overcome.  But it’s going to take a lot of love…
