On September 3, 1783, the American Revolutionary War ended with the formal treaty recognizing the United States of America as a sovereign nation. The treaty set the boundaries between the British Empire in North America and our new republic. It also details fishing rights, restoration of property and the handling of prisoners of war.
It is an important aside to this to know that the United States had been supported in its efforts toward freedom by France, Spain and the Dutch Republic. Each of these nations made separate treaties with Great Britain. These are collectively known as the Peace of Paris.
