Time Spent With the Harvard Classics – Two Years Before the Mast – Dana

We have previously touched on several aspects of the literary classic Two Years Before the Mast by Dana.  Today we will discuss the ship on which this story takes place.  As mentioned before, this was indeed a real ship.  The Pilgrim was a ship that took part in the hides trade.

The Pilgrim was built in 1825 by Bryant, Sturgis & Company out of Boston.  It went down at sea due to a fire in 1856.  The replica of this ship is now a floating class room for the Ocean Institute out of Dana Point, California.  Every summer a volunteer crew mans the brig and it sails along the California coast

It is also interesting to note that the ship has been used in Amistad  and Power Rangers: Turbo.
