Yes is an English progressive rock band that helped pioneer that genre. The band formed in 1968 with members Jon Anderson (vocalist), Chris Squire (bassist), Peter Banks (guitarist), Tony Kaye (keys) and Bill Bruford (drums). Since then, there have been multiple line ups in the band. Down through the explored many musical genres – sometimes within the same song. That has always added a special element for those of us who are fans.
Yes is one of the most successful and influential progressive rocks bands. They have sold 13.5 million RIAA certified albums and won a 1985 Grammy for the instrumental Cinema. Their discography spans 21 studio albums. In 2017, Yes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, specifically honoring Anderson, Squire, Bruford, Kay, Howe, Wakeman, White and Rabin.
The Yes Album is the third album and was released on February 19, 1971 by Atlantic Records. This was the album that first featured guitar maestro Steve Howe and the last album with Tony Banks on keys. It was also the first album not to include any cover versions of songs by others.
The album was notable for its continuation of close vocal harmonies, Kaye’s Hammond Organ, Chris Squire’s melodic bass runs and material that included jazz piano, fun and acoustic music. Howe’s presence included the use of a Portuguese guitar and the solo acoustic guitar piece Clap.
The album was both a critical and commercial success. It reached number 4 in the UK and number 40 in the US. Later, the album became certified as platinum.
