Blackest Night
by Michael Romani
There are evil spirits
Even in heavenly places
Though we don't want to hear it
I'll tell you to your faces
We'd be best off to fear it
And run from these traces
There are things that hunt
In the darkest dread of night
Impulses stronger than we want
Make us tremble until first light
As all the good in us might shunt
Until we ourselves are a fearful sight
Always hiding deep in the shadows
We keep watch and keep close guard
Peering through soulless windows
Wondering if God still holds us in regard
Patterns of dark logic wrapped in black rainbows
Cause us to pray for any sort of way forward
Penny dreadfuls paid in full price
There is no longer any need for light
I suppose one might wonder if that's nice
To hideaway from the eyes of the night
Treating our unnatural observances as vice
And knowing that nothing will again be right
