Sonic Gems – Syd Barrett – The Madcap Laughs

There is something slightly fitting in featuring the debut solo album by Syd Barrett on Halloween.  There’s a bit of madness that just seems to shines through the entire album.

Roger K. “Syd” Barrett lived from January 6, 1946 – July 7, 2006 and was an English composer, singer-songwriter and painter, best known for helping to found and name Pink Floyd.  Excessive drug use led to mental illness and then retirement from active public life.  His influence is still felt through contemporary musicianship due to his innovative guitar work including exploring dissonance, distortion and feedback.

The Madcap Laughs debut album was released in 1970, two years after he left Pink Floyd in April of 1968.   The Madcap Laughs may be heard in its entirety here:
