Based on a sermon based on 1 Samuel 16:7
Substance Over Form
by Michael Romani
I'll say this with great reluctance
Samuel might have been king
But he was all style, no substance
Israel waited for David to bring
Those things close to the heart
Those things that don't fall apart
There wasn't much to say for elegance
No outer sign indicating significance
But there was that something to him
Somehow deeper than a passing whim
There in the deeper things is the truth
Despite any missteps of our youth
A ruddy face kid wallowing in the mud
Smiles to you echoing power in the blood
God sees through the external of this
Into the depths that others miss
Seeing what we are meant to become
The redemption given to us by the One
