Time Spent With the Harvard Classics: Wilhelm Tell – Friedrich von Schiller

The legendary date on which Tell shot an apple off the head of his son with an arrow was November 18, 1307  

“Deeper meaning resides in the fairy tales told to me in my childhood than

in any truth that is taught in life.”  

Born on November 10, 1759, Friedrich von Schiller was a German poet, philosopher, doctor, historian and playwright before his passing on May 9, 1805.  During the last 17 years of his life, he entered into a friendship with Goethe which led to the development of Weimar Classicism.

The drama Wilhelm Tell was written by Schiller in 1804.  The story is, of course, the famous tale of Swiss marksman William Tell in the context of the Swiss struggle for independence from the Habsburg Empire in the early 14th century.  You may read the famous play Wilhelm Tell by Friedrich von Schiller here:
