Sonic Gems: Sinead O’Connor – I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got

Sinead Marie Bernadette O’Connor was born on December 8, 1966.  She legally changed her name to Magda Davitt this year, 2017.  She rose to fame in the late 1980s as an Irish singer-songwriter with her debut The Lion and the Cobra.  In 1990, she made her mark across the world with her version of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U.

Since then she has been embedded in controversy for among other things becoming a priest while maintaining that she is Roman Catholic which forbids women from being priests,  and her other strongly expressed views on organized religion, women’s rights, war and child abuse.  Then there is the long history of mental illness which has led to a long history that would distract from the value of this album.

The second album of her career is 1990’s I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.  It was nominated for four Grammy Awards. In an interesting twist of contrariness, O’Conner refused the nominations and the award.

For managing to sweetly put across so much confused fury in one package as well as decent musicianship, Aloha Promises will give this album and its impact on the music world an eight out of 10.
