Sonic Gems: Sun Ra and His Arkestra – Jazz In Silhouette

Sun Ra was born Herman Poole Blount on May 22, 1914 and changed his name to Le Sony’r Ra.  Before his death on May 30, 1993, he was a renown jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer play, poet and philosopher well known for his experimental music, cosmic philosophy, prolific output and theatrical performances.  For most of his career, he led the Arkestra ensemble.

Jazz In Silhouette is a jazz album recorded on March 6, 1959 and released that same year.  It is considered on of his best albums from Ra’s Chicago period prior to veering off into the avant-garde.  It is perhaps one of the most important jazz albums of the post-war years.   As such, Aloha Promises rates this album eight out of 10.
