Thirst For Power
by Michael Romani
History is replete
In how it completes
A man's thirst for power
Grows and devours
Since the days of Cain and Abel
The wicked man does as able
To take what he believes is his
It's quite simply what is
Hiding behind the structures of power
Awaiting its final dark hour
Hiding behind a clerical collar
But serving the almighty dollar
While the simple man clutches at truth
The smug Priest finds it uncouth
As he's offered his verses
He offers up blasphemy and curses
While the simple man is taken aback
By the faith, the Priest professes but lacks
The simple man knows of fates worse than death
And takes the only path he has left
The Priest thinks he's alone
With no reason or need to atone
But the simple man knows who's there
As he falls to his knees in prayer
Words used as a savage device
Will never beat the living sacrifice
Funny how a Priest doesn't know it
And that in his every lie he shows it
And while the simple man knows he will die
He doesn't need to stop to question why
A good man lives for his daughters
At least when that man is both daddy and father
