Formed in 1983 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, The Flaming Lips are an American rock band the relentlessly recorded several albums and EPs on indie label, Restless, before finally being signed with Warner. Their first release with Warner was She Don’t Use Jelly (1993). In 1999, their ninth album The Soft Bulletin was released which won Album of the Year from NWE. The group’s three Grammy Awards include two for best rock instrumental performance.
The Soft Bulletin was release to wide acclaim as a significantly layered and intricate album. This being a departure from the guitar heavy alternative rock sound. This new approach garnered comparisons from some as the Pet Sounds of the 1990s. As such, and after listening to this album again Aloha Promises Forever is giving this work an eight out of possible 10. This album is oddly fantastical as a symphonic pop triumph that sheds a spacious yet intimate look at real life in all of its mundanities from life in general to the toxicity of a spider bite. Give it a listen if for no other reason than to enjoy a textured audio work well worth the hearing.
