A Conversation In Draft
by Michael Romani
Milliseconds play like mental logistics
Traffic signals defining our linguistics
Tiny words and pauses in our interaction
Help push us past our points of distraction
A single unit found in cooperation
Social cognition lend us coordination
In a drawn line of moral accountability
It's in reference to forming our capacity
Our language is merely our best tool
To keep this thing flowing with unwritten rules
A difficult question can lead to our delay
The little words and pauses cause us to stay
A second limits our tolerance for silence
To wait any longer suggests mental violence
It's not about any sense of strangulation
But a definitive need for smooth communication
The "um", the "uh", and the undefined "well"
Editing on the fly to sort out the fine details
Once consumed these are but superfluity
There's no getting around that human beings are messy
All words can lie or dominate the mental floor
Sickened by the truth some are shown the door
There's a need to circle back and repeat
Just to ensure that communication is complete
The moral architecture tells us when to talk
Like a sort of code that tells us when to walk
Keeping stock and learning how to calibrate
It is the way that we keep things appropriate
