Sonic Gems: Genesis – The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

In Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, England, the rock band Genesis got together in 1967.  The most commercially successful line up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bass/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins.  Significant former members include Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett.  In the band’s career they have moved from folk rock to progressive rock to pop.

After an initial bout of lack of success, the band began to build up a following with Foxtrot in 1972, Selling England By the Pound (1973), and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (1974).  After that, Gabriel left the band to pursue a solo career. Thereafter, Collins took on the role of lead singer and found success with the 1978 single Follow You Follow Me.  Having tasted commercial success the band took on a decisively commercial pop turn after that.  In 2010, Genesis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Genesis’ sixth studio album in 194 was The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.  The concept of this album centers on the spiritual journey of self discovery of Rael, a New York Puerto Rican youth as he interacts with others.  It’s a bit like going down the rabbit hole of progressive rock.  As such, this album rates a 9 out of 10 by Aloha Promises Forever.
