War Drums Beating
by Michael Romani
The war drums are beating
There is no more retreating
But for you, the battle is over
You will be buried in clover
Your fight is over my friend
Your path has come to its end
You will be more than missed
Your value cannot be dismissed
Always loyal and strong
Even when I took you quite wrong
Tears fill this warrior's eyes
As I call out to the God of our skies
Perhaps it's enough to know your pain is gone
As you pass through the veil to the great beyond
If I could have, I would have taken your place
I have never feared meeting death face to face
As you have said, I am too foolish to be scared
This is especially true for those who have cared
Side by side, we rode many a dusty mile
Along the paths of true born tears and smiles
I always knew the one thing true
That I could always count and rely on you
And so, as I bury you here
I shed but the deepest tear
I will miss your laugh and company
As these war drums beat like a symphony
I will sing a song of things you have done
And honor your memory before the One
Quietly, I say this with a warrior's pride
I will see you again, my friend, on the other side
