Founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor, in Cleveland, Ohio, Nine Inch Nails is an Industrial band. It is most famous for the influence of two of its albums, The Downward Spiral (1994) and The Fragile (1999). Despite its records sales the band, Nine Inch Nails has had several feuds with the corporate side of the recording industry.
Nine Inch Nails has been nominated for thirteen Grammy Awards and winning twice for Wish and Happiness In Slavery. Trent Reznor is seen as highly influential and a vital voice in the music industry.
The Downward Spiral is the second studio album released on March 8, 1994. It is an industrial concept album telling the story of a man’s destruction from the beginning of his downward spiral to his attempted suicide. The album features elements of industrial rock, techno and heavy metal music. The album is said to be culmination of Reznor’s personal issues and was conceived as he lived in the mansion that was the scene of the Sharon Tate murders by the Manson Family. The music is in a strong sense focused on texture and space. It is considered as one of the most important albums of the 1990s and is praised for its abrasive and eclectic nature twisted in its dark themes. Listening to it now, Aloha Promises Forever is trying to like this album but sees it as exactly that – loud, abrasive, twisted and while interesting at points, the best we’ll rate this one is a seven out of 10.
