Willful Blindness
by Michael Romani
Few in words but reliable
Is the life found viable
Stated simply in the declarative
The crucial moments in our narrative
These crucial moments of unsparing poetry
Slip the strictures in blurred novelty
The courage found to break the rules
Numbered like the philosophical proof of fools
Such fools as suspend their disbelief
Seeking love given with sated relief
More than the traditional love story
It's found in these moments of unexpected glory
Love and poetry require willful blindness
Constellations speak in amplified silence
Like an experience of pleasure's pain known well
These are the consequences that weave their spell
This has been our way since childhood
Plainly spoken and easily understood
Love requires wandering in patient pain
It's rarely rational and often inane
You can take off the blindfold if you choose
But if you do, you mostly lose
These self aware concerns in all relationships
In still finding the worth of risk as we worship
It is this invitation to the questions of our minds
That we find captivity, unwilling to be left behind
The put down pages she has set beside her
Contain the lost soul of their writer
