Shifting Dice
by Michael Romani

What exactly is behind the roll?
Is it fate or probability?
Belief in what controls
Often shapes our reality
To say that it depends on the nice
Is to really not be very precise

Roman dice like other artifacts
Were more artifice than actual facts
There was something more at play there
Then our present society's desire to be fair
High rolls of benevolence and felicity
Were a conceptualization of the legendary

A haphazard care for perfect symmetry
Was perhaps due to thoughts on the power of prayer
Surrendering belief in chance to control of divinity
Provided the game its influencing snare
After all who needs fairness with God on one's side
Baby needs a new pair of shoes! He let's them slide -
