Hacksaw Objector

Poetry of the Planets - Mars, The Bringer of War

Hacksaw Objector
by Michael Romani

The maliciousness of man to his fellow man
Fighting wars with bullets and hand to hand
Made a God fearing hero out of Desmond Doss
As he valiantly protected others from their loss

A conscientious objector prepared to save
His fellow man from this hellish grave
His mind on the glory of God and one thought
That of saving others as he knew that he ought

Saving a little piece of this life's beauty
Seemed to him, his grace and his natural duty
Praying to God to save just one more man
Into destruction strove this all-American

Unarmed with anything but the Holy Good Book
He did what he knew needed with just one look
These were his brothers, his brothers in arms
And so he would risk all to save them from harm

Wounded four times out there on Hacksaw Ridge
His courage and honor formed a life saving bridge
To carry his brothers over the escarpment side
Giving all glory to God, he was just along for the ride

The heroes he said were those who gave their all
Buried deep in honor but I am sure they would recall
Quiet Desmond Doss lived peacefully in a small town
But it was big enough, I think, to hold this victor's crown
