A Witness of Fireflies
by Michael Romani
I
Formless and void in the darkness
The spirit of God removed the harshness
God said let there be light - and there was light
Seeing the good; He separated day from night
This is the same light we now shine
It's the glory of the story on down the line
Originally, I was not a believer
Being a victim of choice by the great deceiver
It seemed there were a million godly faces
And that God was found in just as many places
I was and still am a seeker after truth
Looking into each "version" as I had from my youth
That is, until the day I woke up in "not my bed"
But the hospital's bed with contrary thoughts in my head
I found myself praying to a God I did not know
I did so in earnest and not just for some sort of show
Either heal me, or please dear Lord, kill me
I attempted my bargain for either sort of eventuality
I had always been a disciple of science
But, a philosophical sort with a conscience
And so, I began this noble experiment
To find if God was real, or, man's most creative event
And so I was healed; I had made the deal
To do my part to follow; and the deal was sealed

Chilean telescopes offer glimpses of illumination
To the earliest moments of a galaxy's formation
And into what happens when galaxies collide
Forcing the birth of more stars in stride
These are not as violent as these sound
Yielding fascinating results to chase around
Glittering arrangements of gravity
Spiral into clusters of their severity
But, in this snapshot of mesmerization
Scientists study specks of photos with fascination
Like gaggles of backyard fireflies
All lit up sooner than thought and before our eyes
It is as though the lights came on like a switch
Starburst galaxies are few and rare ... which...
Makes me wonder as stars slow down and galaxies dim
Synchronized and as if with a sort of intelligent whim
Thousands of stars shining with great intensity
Their whispers - a hint of divine complexity
Formless and void in the darkness
The spirt of God removed the harshness
God said let there be light - and there was light
Seeing the good; He separated day from night
This is the same light we now shine
It's the glory of the story on down the line
