Oxygen Reexamined

One of the little miracles of life that we too often take for granted is the level of oxygen on our fair planet and just what this does for us without much of an effort by most.

Oxygen Reexamined
by Michael Romani

Breath
Natural and essential
Without oxygen
Death
Barren without potential
Devoid of life again

Dallol, Ethiopia
Sulphuric toxicity
No innate ability to grow
Yet, an astrophysical utopia
For pinhead sized duplicity
Is found in the bacteria that grows

In this is the evidence
Of life in a rugged environment
Very different than we perceive
Thankful for the hand of Providence
That has allowed our life so different
And yet, atheists do not believe

We underestimate oxygen
Almost ignoring its chemistry
As it feeds and gives us power
Mixing with tissue and food again
It's an underestimated part of biology
That both strengthens and empowers

Without the presence of oxygen
We could not have our complexity
Yet, we take it for granted as we breathe
Breathing in each breath again and again
Hardly understanding the immensity
That each breath taken allows life to conceive
