Carnegie

Across the United States, one man’s wealth is responsible for the building not hundreds but thousands of libraries.

Carnegie
by Michael Romani

In the annals of American history
Andrew Carnegie bequested his legacy
As a force of Gilded Age philanthropy
When he used his fortune to build libraries

For 35 years, he built 2500 libraries
To bequeath the people an essential legacy
Our towns became monuments to literate community
While passing on knowledge and wisdom's majesty

Each library adorned with signs welcoming all
To serve these communities as living portals
Designed to pass on and along in quiet dignity
Lessons taught us all from art to astronomy
