The Unflinching Eye

The Unflinching Eye
by Michael Romani

We drink a toast among us
Because it is what's done and simply because
To the unflinching eye of the intellectual soul
It is most gratifying to have death under our control

You see, to truly understand death
We must fist draw our last breath
As a first step toward reanimation
And then bring back life's sweet fascination

Tossed back in honor of Lucifer
Whose guiding light is thought to deliver
These secrets to all of humanity
Ingrates who seek after immortality

All things may become possible with time
Though patience for such things is often sublime
Little dreams lost only to again be found
The sorrow felt is all too profound

Digging away at life's great mystery
Stubbed toes that bruise one's dignity
The secret is reanimation by electricity
To call this the Devil's work would be generosity

Turning our minds toward the art of dark science
There's little semblance of a conscience
For we who sought and seek to conquer death
Only find hope in the poison felt in a last breath
