Today Is National Fruit Cake Day!! (run….)

Shelf Life by Michael Romani Raise a glass of eggnog in good cheer Blessed by this holiday time of year But what do we do about this one gift One that creates sometimes the biggest rift... Down through the ages As agreed on by the sages There is a food so regrettable That it is agreed as reject-able Tasting at least better than rubber The sight of fruitcake makes us shudder Sent out to so many at Christmas time It is the ultimate sentence without crime In a recipe little changed since Roman days Overly sweet it could be improved many ways That would add to its unique... taste And that would love leave it going to waste It's a passionate style; served with a smile But disgustingly easy to revile Two cups of fruit and nuts are used to fill With and undertone of brandy we cannot conceal Grandma's bit of mayhem and guilty pleasure That she insists we treat as though a treasure With a poke in the ribs, a forced smile appears We'll just pretend we're blessed by this sculptured cheer (c) December 27, 2019 Michael Romani All Rights Reserved
