Climbing the Relationship Ladder
by Michael Doyle
We say hello to initiate
Hoping that we might appreciate
Enough at this first impression
That it might lead to accession
Pressing on simply to explore
Crossing that boundary to something more
We work at reducing the uncertainty
Though certainly there is no urgency
More of a survey than a poll
Wondering if we might have common goals
And if we do, we might dare to intensify
If we find enough in common to amplify
Our new partnership in its stages
As we begin turning each other's pages
Into that magical book of becoming one
Letting the locks to our hearts be undone
In correspondence, we do respond
As into each other, we do bond
Giving in more to each in concession
With each subtle move is made in succession
Integrating as we do into stability
In each other finding our reliability
That final coin having been tossed
We hope to find the benefits beyond the cost
Treating each other with leniency
To cut past the events of uncertainty
We bend to meet any unmet expectation
As together, we grow into our love's maturation
