A Visit To An Exotic Feline Rescue
by Michael Doyle
I visited a feline rescue
With my daughters to take a view
Thoughts given to the depraved
And the gracious souls who've saved
These big cats, who were once little
Drawn towards the drama's middle
Of how humans believing themselves clever
Thought very little of how they'd ever
How is it, tell, they did not know
That big cats are in the habit in which they grow
Vanity, it seems, is engulfed in madness
Tragic as it seems, it leads to sadness
When kittens grow up no longer sweet and cute
And the egotists no longer want their brutes
Cast aside unheeded as if its their fault
And as if all reasonability has had its revolt
And my eyes, like those of millions of others
Fill with tears for our animal sisters and brothers
Who only wish that they might find a sense of love
And a place to live with stars hanging above
As they might have if only left in the wild
Instead of abused and wantonly defiled
Still there are those who do lovingly care for them
And that, if nothing else, gives me hope again
