Consent of the Governed
by Michael Doyle
As a people, our government transformed
When we could not be forcefully conformed
To a loss of rightful, popular sovereignty
This could not be allowed by our dignity
Unjust in his dictatorial set of actions
We, the Americans, demanded satisfaction
This planted the seeds of fundamental rights
Enduring today like a thousand lights
Natural law endows us with right reason
Reconciled with nature in all its seasons
Though our world is shifting yet again
These principles are needed to be protected again
With natural law violated in the public square
We must push back for just as we duly declare
The fundamental threshold is speech and petition
As we dig in deep with God in this repetition
Refining and enlarging through some revision
We find our rights and path closer to precision
To find our agreements through candid moderation
This then is for the good of our republican nation
This is native to the faith of the system conceived
To keep our nation enlightened and not deceived
By the demagoguery that is so falsely spoken
We must seek unity in correct ways again unbroken
In our declaration, there is reasoned justification
For the protection and the freedom of our nation
Set out, one-by-one, in its full-flow articulation
Our republicanism stands as its own ratification
Following the certain logic of what is moral
Through diverse views we remain together, yet plural
That path must duly lean toward reconciliation
With our first principles kept in our deliberation
This government is set up between mankind
With each having differing eyes that are not blind
This gives the ability to find workable governing ways
As the consent of the governed finds itself in different days
