On Being A Knight
by Michael Doyle
Of all the characteristics of being a knight
In a courtyard of perpetual light
One must fast to compose one's fortitude
If a knight errant is to bear right attitude
Forward, the procession moves
To find Don Quixote and then disprove
All the enchantments that affect the curse
And that must be removed by tortured verse
A duel to be fought as if one is brave
In the grievous hope meant to perhaps save
Those whose hearts turn to stone
And by the thoughts that make a knight stand alone
Saints and sons of God walk on their own road
AS do knights errant as their dreams grow old
Too many of these paths have never been walked
But are believed by those listening to what is talked
As all the little birds prefer their own dances
And as guitars are strummed in melodic romances
The water needed must again be poured and carried
While false hopes are lost and again buried
