As If the Last Time
by Michael Doyle
My heart keeps being haunted
By these half-remembered lines
The ones that are never wanted
Like a kiss given as if the last time
Here's looking at you, kid
She half smiles, keeping it hid
That heartbreak is only an emotion away
In that beautiful world of yesterday
A heart's journey can be a long trail
With no telling what luck will prevail
In a world tied to chaos as the cost
These are the wounded lives of those who have lost
It's a vacation that isn't anyone's choice
Complicated as it is with all the inner voices
That argue over these complications
Constantly caught in a world of anticipation
The Cafe Americain comes with its own drink
And a lot of doubt about what to overthink
But think we must whatever it is that we believe
Of changes that confuse us as they continue to deceive
