Sucker Punch

Late Night Thinking and Studying
Sucker Punch
by Michael Doyle

You're never fully dressed
Without a smile
But it's hard to wear one
When you feel that you're on trial

Don't put it down
As a matter of happenstance
When you're watching
A wrong conviction buried in circumstance

Facing a false accusation
Isn't a pleasant feeling
When made by someone trusted
It's a sucker punch that's compelling

People are who they are
It only takes a dime's worth of care
To know when you've pushed too far
I question how it is that you dare

After I dove into vulnerability
Doing something that I openly feared
You still have the harsh ability
To question if my loyalty disappeared

It's a sucker punch...
... From you to me
