“The life of every man is a diary in which he means to write one story, and writes another, and his humblest hour is when he compares the volume as it is with what he vowed to make it.” -J.M. Barrie, novelist and playwright (9 May 1860-1937)

I have always loved this quote ever since I first read it 14 years ago. It really makes you stop and think what you might be writing in your “life’s diary!” Based on the books that I have read by him, Barrie struggled with the fact that he was growing up and had no way to stop it. He (or at least his main characters) seemed to recede into childishness as a self-protective method. So this quote makes me wonder what his “life’s diary” showed him when he reviewed it at the end. Had he lived as a full man, or had he hidden in the fantasy lands of childhood for too long?

Life is fascinating isn’t it? It seems we take purposeful steps forward. Then sometimes we stagnate for a bit sort of swimming in place. Other times we have minor regressions. I would imagine that anyone being in mindful of this would perhaps decide to be more purposeful in their intentionality. But maybe not. Maybe other decisions would be made like spending more time relaxing and maybe even regressing in some areas. What do you think?

I agree! We all have areas in life where we need to make progress. But we also all have areas where we need to slow down and take steps backward. In fact, as I’ve grown older, I have realized that I need to slow waaaay down and stop trying to live in the future. Otherwise, I’ll miss what’s right in front of me!
