History Dignifies the Presidents

History Dignifies the Presidents
by Michael Doyle

On this Presidents Day, a few comments are deserved
As we look back on nation as it is preserved
True to the faith of our republic's sovereignty
Is the struggle to keep our nation's dignity

Our story is told across America with each sunrise
That we are here today because of those more wise
Some which of which have been known to take up residence
In a White House as our nation's best presidents

Unto this present day, often from a well-shaken past,
There have been concerns that we may not last
And still we are and still we will always continue to be
That beacon of light on the hill of our shining on our history

However imperfect, though we have come to constant compromise
Taking a step back from criticism to truly begin to analyze
We find our strength has come from persons of integrity
Who taken that solemn oath as president to ensure our legacy

Carries on across our nation and even world wide
Giant steps, sometimes stumbled, but with cause and pride
This is a story of races and thoughts across our territory
Sometimes these conflict but all are part of our history

As we take our best look into what will become our future
We also look to the past to decide which parts we will nurture
And braver men than you and I take the mantle of the presidency
And swear to uphold our ideals within their great dignity

These men will come to include a woman some soonish day
But all of them have led our nation forward in their best way
And so doing they are worthy of our acknowledge respect
May we keep each of their memories absent any deep regret

But for those who were taken before their time, much too soon
As bullets and death binds us under that same wise old moon
Let us remember this Presidents Day with hats over hearts
As we have since barely after our great nation had her start
