Rural America

Rural America
by Michael Doyle

Despite the beauty of the scenery,
There are challenges in this community.
There is more here than the movies show
And the truth is there's more to know.

There's a harsh struggle in the economy.
Jobs are scarce and the people walk humbly.
Main Street might look clean and beautiful,
But life here can be less than wonderful.

A dependable set of wheels is needed to get around.
Otherwise, your feet are pounding the ground.
Unless your skill set includes socialization,
You are likely to be trapped in social isolation.

In a society of nearly instant everything,
The speed of country living is next to nothing.
The simple life might make for a great memory,
But not when you have depended on next day delivery.

While there's a lot to be said for the country way,
Fractured roads and bridges have seen better days.
Nearly forgotten, the speed of life is an inconvenience.
Complaining too loudly or often is seen as social deviance.

The next time that you think of moving out to the country,
Think far beyond the beauty and thoughts of the scenery.
That quiet life comes with its share of struggles to live.
Some of these struggles can be hard to manage and forgive.
