We Will Do the Rest

We Will Do the Rest
by Michael Doyle

With a little rain and the truest grit
Following admonitions to never forget,
We'll know liberty's tree from its roots grown
To the top of freedom's leaves, deeply flowing.

We've driven the distance to see the sights
Across this nation, as we talked of our rights
It seems Bari's mouth has it all wrong again,
Misunderstanding the Constitution he's sworn to defend.

We have explained as deeply as we feel we must,
That it's a Constitutional Republic in which we trust.
Yet, Bari and friends want to talk of democracy,
Our founders found its failures to be legendary.

We've had time to think and sing a few songs,
This family of mine right where it seems to belong.
But best of all was when we stopped and we walked
Because in those times, we thought and we talked.

Independence Day unmasks the nobility of mankind.
As we think about just causes and hoping to find
That honor and posterity are not hereditary
But instead, we wage our struggle in necessity.

Self-evident truths lead to unalienable rights,
And in the eyes of tyranny, this leads to fights
As those daring to be righteous in improvement
Push forward to the republican form of government.

Sometimes my daughters believe this is all a test.
The answers should be simpler and answered best
By following the dictum of following their hearts.
I suppose that's been my fault from the start.
