Thought For the Day: Truth Is So Obscure In These Times, and Falsehood So Established, That, Unless We Love the Truth, We Cannot Know It

“Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the truth, we cannot know it.” – Blaise Pascal

Through the Years

Through the Years
by Michael Doyle

Alive somewhere in all my ADHD
I sometimes walk right into me
When I do, in times like this
I find there isn't much to miss

I have always tried to be my best
Stretching myself to meet my tests
Head-on collisions find me madly
Striving to reach for the godly

It seems like I'm too often guessing
This struggle of life offers blessings
Learning to adapt to moments of the pensive
Has taught me to be patient and sensitive

Like this moment trapped in a small town
Trying my best to smile instead of frown
I had traveled here to see the moonbow
Instead, I find myself minutes from its shadow

The engine I came in on has been blown
Relying on assurances, I should have known
I find myself and my daughters in a hotel room
Where we share a box of cookies instead of gloom

I remind myself of gratitude for being alive
And I know with patience, we will yet survive
The world is filled with suffering in degrees
The best we have is to live as if to please

The God we know and worship in His Heaven above
Sharing moments with my daughters filled with love
Knowing there are lessons for them as we overcome
And life passes on with the beating of the drum

Sorrow and silence are part of what makes us strong
But one sweet, loving smile tells me where I belong
Daring as they are quietly writing from imagination
I see them facing this without any sign of indignation

And I know that everything is going to turn out right
These bigger girls from the little girls I hugged tight
This is the path of life that makes everything alright
Yes, there are the big girls grown from those I held tight

Both these beauties have grown from the moonage daydream
Looking like and acting like princesses on a movie screen
And I sit here thinking to myself how can anything be wrong
As long as they love me, I know exactly where I belong

Thought For the Day: Once You Hear the Details of Victory, It Is Hard To Distinguish It From A Defeat

First Principles: It Seems To Have To Have Been Reserved To the People of This Country, By their Conduct and Example, To Decide the Important Questions

“It seems to have been reserved to the people of this country, by their conduct and example, to decide the important questions, whether societies of men are really capable or not of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or whether they are forever destined to depend for their political constitutions on accident and force.” – Alexander Hamilton (1787)

The Power In No

The Power In No
by Michael Doyle

In my life, I've been a son
Held by a mother as second to none
To my sister, I have been a brother
Loved by her like no other
I've been a doting sort of father
Of my two beautiful, loving daughters

And as these things I've observed
Women getting less than they deserved
Many inconvenient truths stood in the way
Of their happiness on too many days
Seeking empowerment and self-respect
And instead receiving abject neglect

Too many times, they're made to wait
On things that have come never or too late
Like medical care that was actually healing
Or the sort of love given with feelings
I've watched diligently and observed
Women I've loved getting less than deserved

Unanswered letters hold a proper weight
Dreams and hopes consigned to bitter fate
Told to find themselves, they've been alone
They gave themselves until no one was at home
Waiting for calls that never came on the phone
Looking into mirrors and feeling alone

The world has lent out just a little more rope
To dash dreams on the rocks of abandoned hope
The word "No" is without any shade of pretense
The greatest power available in a single sentence
Women need to believe in their full capacity
And in so doing, live up to their capability

Thought For the Day: The Well Taught Philosophic Mind To All Compassion Gives; Casts Round the World An Equal Eye, and Feels For All That Lives

Watercolor Still Life

Watercolor Still Life
by Michael Doyle

When you ask me about the Harlem Renaissance
I have to ponder and work out my best response
Art Deco found its African American affirmation
Delivered as a watercolor still life in confirmation

That things are never quite as concise as seen
That is especially true when dealing with human beings
It's often there we need to deal with what's in our minds
Wondering at the extent of what it is that we find

The creative ego of an artist is usually mostly vanity
At least for those who do not push the edges of sanity
Modern art stopped reflecting the best of simple stories
Its hope was that it might find the greater glories

Tattered pictures from real life hang crooked on the wall
It is those sorts of memories that help us best to recall
Crushing grief and voiceless faith controls the competition
Pages of truth are painted without a moment's repetition

Things of absolute beauty are often far more complicated
Then they first appear and it is certain in moments faded
As time marches along the hands of ancient, broken clocks
Still, truth is told at least twice a day; or so goes the talk

The creative ego of an artist is usually mostly vanity
At least for those who do not push the edges of sanity
Modern art stopped reflecting the best of simple stories
Its hope was that it might find the greater glories

..but it never did.

First Principles: Ambition Must Be Made To Counteract Ambition. There Interest of the Man Must Be Connected With the Constitutional Rights of the Place

“Ambition must be made to counteract ambition. The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. What is government itself but the greatest of all reflections on human nature?” – James Madison (1788)
