The Details On Liberty Street
by Michael Doyle
Mortality beats a heavy drum in perspective.
Memories of past conversations are kept respective
Of all the years that have since come and gone.
Only the night herself can say when to move on.
The sharing of souls calls for a renewed conversation.
The morbidity of vampires is its own desecration.
Still, with guarantees in place, confession may be bared,
The truth is in the confessions evil has willingly shared.
Too many errors call for truth and reconciliation.
An interview begins with intemperate negotiation.
Each side realizes there were things left unsaid,
But isn't that always the way with the undead?
Generations have passed for this prince among the undead.
Storyville holds gambling and gluttony, and more, it is said.
Mankind is often motivated and ruled by products of desire.
There are the decrepit vices that set the world on fire.
Compassion is seen as a weakness on the streets of liberty.
Roughness is the only position strong enough for dignity
One mistake after another erodes a man's corruptible soul,
Until, at last, it is Lucifer who grabs the hand of control.
These are the pains kept in solemn preparation,
And the breakfast table knows its own narration.
Every view is heard in pointing to the confusion.
The confusion caused by the principalities of delusion.
As a man descends, he loses his way to confession.
Instead, he increases his tithe in his concession.
Some in the Church willingly look the other way.
This is a decision they'll rue one soon-enough-day.
Dirt from the dollars gained lust chased by desolation.
The demons of drink knew their own contribution.
A jazz band below played along in ragtime syncopation.
The Devil knows the strains of this sinful nation.
Shadows are often dancing along the river's edge,
Bringing evil's pleasure walked up to the ledge.
The gaze of the vampire leaves a man immobilized.
This is the weakness found in being mesmerized.
Where a man is willing to slice his brother's breastbone,
This is a place where the Devil can make his home.
The power of the vampire's gaze emasculates in its measure,
And the lesser man becomes less man than a possessed treasure.

“Allow a government to decline paying its debts and you overthrow all public morality-you unhinge all the principles that preserve the limits of free constitutions. Nothing can more affect national prosperity than a constant and systematic attention to extinguish the present debt and to avoid as much as possibly the incurring of any new debt.” – Thomas Jefferson

“When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been murderers and tyrants, and for a time they can seem invincible. But in the end they always fall. Think of it, always.” -Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 Oct 1869-1948)

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.” – Isaiah 5:20-21 NIV

Wounded Bluntness
by Michael Doyle
It seems cliché, by revealing,
When we talk about our covert feelings,
That even writers aren't sure what's good.
It's well enough hoping to be understood.
The personal is what others find compelling.
Otherwise, just what is it that you're revealing?
That is, other than speculations based on the glory,
Found in stealing the thunder of another's story.
After all, there are only so many notes to sing.
It's the skill in arrangement that makes a ring.
We are all stuck in our well-cultivated prisons,
And it's hard to see beyond the deconstructed prisms.
There are so many books left to sit on and then write.
But then again, maybe it is that you shouldn't.
Not that I wish to come across as uptight -
But why say those things that normally you couldn't...
Like a stinging bee flying into a gossip's mouth,
Or telling the redundancy of birds flying due south.
If there's nothing deep or words worth their say,
Maybe a void of silence is the best way to truly stay?
I ask myself the unvoiced but endless question.
The one that brings about my golden hesitation.
Are my thoughts, mine to be kept isolated and alone?
Or maybe worthy of being carved into unbreakable stone?
Is what I feel thought-provoking or simply indigestion?
The contemplations had slipped into mindless oblivion.
Or were these only indiscretions, as the case may be?
I scribble on, but is it just out of the boldest vanity?
Every practiced event plays out its own false imagery,
The words written are okay, but will they ever be legendary?
I didn't mean to seem overly and openly contrary,
But as October comes, I look like Stephen King at a cemetery.
Autumn leaves are always looked forward to as expected.
But the elements of surprise shouldn't be neglected.
Jaded lovers cling to memories of how lucky they are,
While at least one of them is wishing on a shining star.
It's all about the jagged edges of our wounded bluntness.
So many stumble at not-so-funny business.
It's hard to look lovely and amazing while walking,
But that September has left everyone talking.

“We have to create a sustainable environment, worldwide, and we’re not doing it. The best thing we can do with the rest of this century is aggressively acquire – and put aside – the richest natural reserves that we can, and then do our best to manage the needs and desires of the 11 billion people we expect to have by the end of the century. This is where biology is headed. For that reason, the sooner we get on with mapping biodiversity on Earth, the better off biology will be – not to mention the whole subject of saving it before we carelessly throw it away.” – E.O. Wilson

“A republic, by which I mean a government in which the scheme of representation takes place, opens a different prospect and promises the cure for which we are seeking.” – James Madison (1790)
