Thought For the Day: To A Father Growing Old, Nothing Is Dearer Than A Daughter

“To a father growing old, nothing is dearer than a daughter.” -Euripides, playwright (c. 480-406 BCE)

Now imagine being blessed with two very different from each other and uniquely wonderful daughters. It has been the very best part of my life to date, despite all else.

Thought For the Day: The Phrase “No One Is Above the Law” Has A Corollary: No One Should Be Below the Law. Equal Justice Ought To Be the Goal

“The phrase ‘no one is above the law’ has a corollary: no one should be below the law. Equal justice ought to be the goal, not using the Department of Justice as a political weapon to destroy an opponent.”  – Cal Thomas

First Principles: A Good Moral Character Is the First Essential In A Man…The Habits Contracted At Your Age Are Generally Indelible

“[A] good moral character is the first essential in a man, and that the habits contracted at your age are generally indelible, and your conduct here may stamp your character through life. It is therefore highly important that you should endeavor not only to be learned but virtuous.” – George Washington (1790)

Traverse City Blues

Mist Valley - Moose Under An Olde Time Worn Tree
Traverse City Blues
by Michael Doyle

It comes about every now and then
When a soul feels lost and needs some zen
Then is the time to hit the road
And ease the tension looking to explode

The thing is that seven hours
Snaking through construction sours
Even the best intended attitude
As you head to the sunny side of latitude

Going to Traverse City in all its hues
Tired of paying all my over dues
Going to Traverse City with my blues
Going to Traverse City in need of a muse

Lost inside my mind with every mile
In need of some quiet time and a smile
I had never been this far up the third coast
If you want some lighthouses, it has the most

Who would have thought it was this in reach
An extended coastline of dunes and beach
And here it filled with suntans and fun
It was just right and ready to be begun

Going to Traverse City in all its hues
I was tired of paying all my over dues
Heading to Traverse City with my blues
It was a vacation begging for me to choose

Then up the peninsula to Sleeping Bear Dunes
This was better than guessing at runes
There was a natural sense of magic in that sand
That only a homesick surfer could understand

The whisper is that there's little light pollution
If you want to view the stars, it's a sure solution
Cruising the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
Its tunnel of trees can make you happy to be alive

Going to Traverse City to get ride of my blues
You know I'm tired of overpaying all my dues
Heading to Traverse City is what I choose
When I got no other way of getting rid of my blues

Thought For the Day: The Only Way That You Can Have A Joy That Doesn’t Fade Away Is From the Lord

“The only way that you can have a joy that doesn’t fade away is from the Lord. Any other type of joy is actually happiness that comes from circumstances and outcomes. … Joy from the Lord is really the only thing that can keep you motivated — just in a good mindset no matter the outcomes.” – Grace Lyons, Sooners Captain, to ESPN’s Alex Scarborough regarding the pressures of winning

First Principles: Without Justice Being Freely, Fully, and Impartially Administered, Neither Our Persons, Nor Our Rights, Nor Our Property, Can Be Protected

“Without justice being freely, fully, and impartially administered, neither our persons, nor our rights, nor our property, can be protected. And if these, or either of them, are regulated by no certain laws, and are subject to no certain principles, and are held by no certain tenure, and are redressed, when violated, by no certain remedies, society fails of all its value; and men may as well return to a state of savage and barbarous independence.” – Joseph Story (1833)

Across Life’s Breeze

Bahama Breeze
Across Life's Breeze
by Michael Doyle

It takes a fight
To find the victory
It takes the light
To build history

Our hands lifted
Upward and high
Belief unshifted
Our eyes are toward the sky

From the cross
To the empty tomb
Victory from seeming loss
Began in Mary's womb

Undefeated in every hour
Holiness brings this nation
To our greatest power
Leading us to our destination

The toughest battles fought
Begin down on our knees
Seeking the truth that must be sought
His name is whispered across life's breeze
