Okay, so far, so good. I suppose playing catch up to an ongoing flow of poetic creativity is never easy. I am satisfied enough. Or, that is, I was. Then slam dunk, quicker than I ‘thunk’, there is Day 2 of the challenge.
The challenge? Write a poem inspired by or in the form of a recipe. Up until now, I thought of cooking and poetry in two separate categories. Who knows, maybe this will lead to a new format for one of those cooking shows. The challenge, do not just come up with a recipe that might be remotely tasty, but, provide the judges a rhyme….. Yeah.. no, I don’t think that’s a great formula for success……
Teach Us To Cook by Michael Romani Daddy, Daddy Teach us to cook This can't be And then with one look I am absolutely sunk Love like this has its way I might as well be punch drunk As to begin this day Without teaching what I know To the two princesses and their eyes Wide with wonder from some cooking show There are only two replies And yes to them always gets the best of me Soul wrapped around their fingers I go Gathered in the kitchen, we are family I teach them the chorizo and eggs they know Heating a twelve inch iron skillet Crumbled chorizo just enough to fill it Browning this succulent, spicy taste Until we add pico de gallo without haste Heated until these are heated through We whip up four eggs with spices, we do Slipping the eggs around and around Until the meat and veggies flow and abound A few minutes pass until at last We gather these together and fast Slipping into another frying pan We heat up tortillas as fast as we can Filling each tortilla with just enough Adding cheese before we fold over this stuff Browning the tortilla filled with edible yummies Just long enough before it heads toward our tummies This then is lesson of cooking we've done As a great way of greeting the morning sun Adding to the plate some golden potatoes And then a few slices of sun ripened tomato There is one ingredient most important of all Can you girls tell me, please, do you recall? That's right beyond any sort of silly doubt The ingredient of love is what this is all about (c) April 4, 2017 Michael Romani
