First Principles: Happiness and Dignity Rest On Virtue

“The happiness and dignity of man I admit consists in the practice of private virtues, and to this he is stimulated by the rewards promised to such conduct. In this he acts for himself, and with a view of promoting his own particular welfare.” – Carter Braxton, signer of the Declaration of Independence

Contrary to what we are led to believe these days, the vast majority of the signers of the Declaration of the Independence and founders of the American republic were devout Christians albeit tolerant of other walks and ways in life and belief.   It might well be said that the American Revolution was born from a two prong fork.  First, the Great Awakening.  Second, a profound belief in reason (the Enlightment).
