Time Spent With the Harvard Classics: The Song of Roland, Part II –

It is said that Roland died at Roncesvaux on August 15, 778.  It is, therefore, only fitting that we discuss The Song of Roland (La Chanson de Roland).  This classic epic poem is based on the Battle of Roncevaux which occurred during the reign of Charlemagne.  It is the oldest surviving major work of French literature.

Scholars  have estimated this epic was written by a poet named Turold between approximately 1040 and 1115.  The belief is the poem is inspired by the Castilian campaigns of the 1030s.  The epic tale went on to be an influence on the First Crusade.

It has been a very busy week this week and it’s a very late day with a morning’s drive to the regional office of where I work.  There will be plenty of time to get into this epic’s tale on another occasion. So, for tonight, I will end this post at this and wish you all a very good night.

The epic classic, The Song of Roland, Part II may be read by clicking here:
