First Principles: Licentiousness In Spreading False News Is Abusive

“During the course of administration, and in order to disturb it, the artillery of the press has been leveled against us, charged with whatsoever its licentiousness could devise or dare. These abuses of an institution so important to freedom and science are deeply to be regretted, inasmuch as they tend to lessen its usefulness and to sap its safety.” — Thomas Jefferson (1805)

While truthful press should never be limited as it is necessary to maintaining and informed public, outright lies and contrivances are not necessarily protected by the First Amendment.  Read up on the false allegations spread against Thomas Jefferson and you will see why he changed his mind from believing as is often quoted that the press should never be limited to believing that there are some press that defies convention and reason and should not be permitted.  The Democrats are starting a whisper campaign that isn’t so whispered that President Trump’s railings at false news and news that is really just the idle chatter of people who have not matured beyond grade school somehow attacks the meaning and use of a free press.  I don’t think Thomas Jefferson, no matter how misquoted by them, would agree.  I think he, like me, would not necessarily like all the conduct of President Trump but would agree with him in stating fake news must stop.
