Sonic Gems: Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

On March 25, 1947, Reginald K. Dwight was born and became the English singer, pianist and composer, Elton John.  Together with lyricist Bernie Taupin, he has collaborated on more than 30 albums in his five decade long career.  During this time, he has sold over 300 million records which makes him one of the best selling artists in the world.  John has had more than 50 Top 40 hits and seven consecutive number one US albums.

John had learned to play piano at a young age and by in 1962 formed Bluesology.  He remained in the various incantations of the band until forming the songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin in 1967.   In 1970 Your Song became a hit single for his second album Elton John which reached the top ten in both the US and UK.    Besides his commercial success, John has had success in musical theater with The Lion King, Aida and Billy Elliott.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is the seventh studio album by Elton John and was released in 1973.  The album has sold over 30 million copies.  This album has many classics including Candle In the WindBennie and the JetsGoodbye Yellow Brick RoadSaturday Night’s Alright For Fighting and Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.
