A Glass House of Orchids
by Michael Romani
If I could, I would start the day over and begin
To go with my girls to that artsy green house again
That is to say if they would let us back in
The orchids are in bloom in the glass house just as then
Delicate in fragrance for all most all of the most part
But each sculptured beauty seems to be it's own heart
Pulling at the sleeves of highly feigned high society
One look from little girls' eyes told me what it meant to me
Held in high regard since times so very ancient
I watched as they examined each one and was patient
Looking at each shape and color, these beauties of mine
Looked at each with a thoughtfulness that will refine
As I continued watching, increasingly aware of my mortality
I came to understand why this flower represents vitality
The tiniest of these are said to symbolize feminine wile
I watched them look and look again and all I could do was smile
