Jackpot Rock Memory

Turns out that as I review, I also missed Day 20 of the Na/GloPoWriMo 2019.   This challenge was to write a poem based on slang.

Jackpot Rock Memory
by Michael Romani

Taking some comfort in some ono grinds
At the Zippys in Wahiawa's old town
We knew it was poho in this small world
But we were ohana and we didn't mind
Remembering back to the ole days we find
Happiness in the toes we once curled
Jumping off into the shallows of the Bay
This was the real school we graded from
Looking hapahaole I fit in like a glove
That is until someone liked beef or some
Other thing that offered less than love
I would remind them of Pu'u o Maukua's temple
Asking everyone to please just keep it simple
Hanging loose like a shaka full of howzit
And telling it just like it is a little bit
That it doesn't matter if you're white as shark bait
Life was and is too short for that kine hate
Offering a bite of malasada made for a lot of peace
Giving a sorta mellow way to simmer down and appease
Those were the sorts of memories as we talk story
Remembering the big waves and swan dive glory
Now they tell me that the Rock is mostly off limits
And I feel sorry for the sistahs and brahs who missed it
